Horizon 6 – Ubuntu 12.4 Setup

If you are trying to prep Ubuntu 12.4 for Horizon pool, this post would provide quick high level overview of the steps:

Quick Installation Steps

Install Ubuntu as you would normally do as Virtual Machine.

Define password for root:  sudo passwd

Install open-vm-tools: apt-get install open-vm-tools

Install openssh-server for easy access: apt-get install openssh-server

Enable ssh access to roor: nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config and change Permitrootlogin yes (comment out previous entry)

Edit etc/hosts file to point to hostname/FQDN

Ubuntu is not supported for 3D graphics yet but I wanted to give it a try as this is my demo environment, so please skip this section if you are not testing it. The steps is similar to installing NVIDIA drivers on standalone machines.

CTRL-ALT-F1 to open TTY

Stop display manager by: /etc/init.d/lightdm stop

Install Prereqs: apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`

blacklist nouvea: nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf

Add the following:

blacklist nouveau
blacklist lbm-nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
alias nouveau off
alias lbm-nouveau off

Disable kernel nouvea: echo options nouveau modeset=0 | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-kms.conf

Update initramfs: update-initramfs –u

For kernel modules to be upgraded by driver, install dkms: apt-get install dkms

Install NVIDIA. Just run the file…

Start Display Manager: /etc/init.d/lightdm start

Edit NVIDIA Licensing config (I have M60): nano /etc/nvidia/gridd.conf enter serverURL:7070 and grid option

Restart NVIDIA: service nvidia-gridd restart

Check logs for activation: grep gridd /var/log/syslog

Install View Agent:

Extract the files; tar -xzvf VMware-viewagent-linux-build##.tar.gz
and install using ./install_viewagent.sh with the options below:

-d domainname (eg, demo.local)
-u AD User Account
-p password. (You need to escape special characters with \)

and reboot once done.

Hope helps.
